Cycling between the lagoon and the sea: Feniglia beach and its pine forest

A relaxing ride along the placid waters of Orbetello’s two lagoons and the open sea. Move silently through Feniglia’s pinewood, where the sounds and scents of the Mediterranean vegetation reign supreme. Enjoy a refreshing swim before getting back on the bikes towards Orbetello’s Etruscan walls, the ancient Spanish windmill and the historic seaplane base. If you wish, you can have a wonderful lunch with fresh fish caught according to local traditional and sustainable systems.

Meet at La Stazioncina Bistrò, via Lungolago dei Pescatori 2, Orbetello.

Choose your bicycle and depart. The tour unfolds around the waters of the sea and Orbetello Lagoon, moving through a protected humid zone, where various species of birds nest and pass their winter: cormorants, herons, flamingos, ospreys and black-winged stilts.

Enter the Feniglia Pinewood on its large and flat bike path that goes through the entire tombolo, a strip connecting the Argentario Promontory with the mainland, where the sounds and perfumes of the Mediterranean vegetation reign supreme.
We will stop along the pinewood to admire the beach and the breathtaking views of Porto Ercole. During summer you can enjoy a refreshing swim.
Heading back to Orbetello we’ll observe some historic attractions of the town, like the seaplane base, the ancient walls, the Duomo. Then, you are free for lunch or dinner.

How to arrive

By train
Orbetello is located on the Roma-Pisa train line, reachable in two hours from both Rome Termini Station and Pisa Central station. If you arrive from Florence, take the train towards Pisa Centrale and then change train from there.

By car
Orbetello is reachable through the Aurelia State Road. Those who arrive from the Grosseto area need to drive down the Aurelia for roughly 40 km and exit at Orbetello.
Those arriving from the South, Rome or Civitavecchia need to drive up Aurelia and exit at Orbetello.
